Sunroom Revamped – Skylights and Slatted Ceiling

When Edje showed up on the scene our job seemed simple.  Pour concrete posts to add knewls and banisters around the front porch, fix a little water damage around two skylights in the back sunroom and patch a hole in the soffit.

It didn’t take a lot of investigating to discover this was not the whole story.  The angle of mis-hung gutters and a facia board that was hung too low created a perfect storm.  It turned out water was pouring into the walls, rotting everything, for years!

The Edje crew regrouped, cleared our schedule (this was a dangerous situation to leave our customers in) and penned out a new plan of attack.

The customers called a reliable roofing company and while their appointment time approached we performed an extensive, but very careful, demo operation.  Nothing that didn’t have to go stayed, but everything that did was carefully cut out and removed.  All usable instals, like the windows and trim were meticulously cleaned up, de-nailed and set aside for reinstall to save our customer as much money as possible.  No one wants to find themselves in this kind of situation and we take it upon ourselves to make it as painless and affordable as possible.

This wasn’t nearly all.  In order for the roofers to install the roofing shingles and skylights, the roof planks and skylight jams had to be installed by us.  The jams were a feat in themselves, given their angle, flare out where they meet the ceiling, and the previous problems the homeowners had keeping them leak-proof.  All of this was accounted for and after days of custom cutting and assembling, the skylight jams were installed and ready for panes.  Additional low-voltage power lines were run to the skylights in order to give them a light-up frame feature, which turned out stunning.

After the roof was in, Edje installed a beautiful cedar stained, tongue-and-groove ceiling (an improvement on the previous plywood ceiling), reinstalled the windows and all the trim (on the inside and outside), applied a fresh coat of paint, and reinstalled a tile floor in response to tiles that had loosened.

Rain made the entire project an even bigger challenge, but the Edje crew managed to arrive at a beautiful result in the end as usual.
